Skills and Ways to learn Geography

Students have subjects named Science and Social in their curriculum, but the subject Geography can be called as Social Science since Geography is not only studies about the Physical Earth like Mountains, Rivers and Capitals but also studies about how man is having relation with Earth and his role of modifying the Earth.

Learning and understanding Geography is easier, but HOW? What are the Skills and ways to learn Geography?

1. Curious– How, What, Why, Where & When – Learning is easier when children have curious about new things and having questioning appetite like How, What, Why, Where & When. Anything in the world can be understood easily when children have the learning interest with curious mind.
2. “Seeing is believing”-Observation– Physical Earth means features of Earth are physically available on Earth like Mountains, Hills, Rivers, Plains, Crops etc. The only way is understand them is “Seeing is believing”. It means children have to go to outside from class room and home to see and observe the matter present in the books. Once children are really seen them, it is easier to understand the matter in the textbook.
3. “Present is the key to the Past”-Imagination-Physical features like Hills, Rivers are so dynamic, their shape and size are not the same from year to year. They are constantly undergoing change due to many factors like natural and manmade. Children have to improve the skill of Imagination by observation. “Present is the key to the Past” means children have to imagine the past by observing the present. For example River is undergoing change due to heavy rains, sand lifting, erosion etc , the same thing might happened in the past for the river.
4. “Photographic Memory – Locating on Globe and Maps- It is very difficult to go to every place to see all the hills, rivers etc. many of the physical features and landforms are present in the Globe and Maps. Frequent seeing the Globe and Map will improve the location memory.i.e “Photographic Memory”
5. “Practice makes man Perfect”- Drawing the Maps, sketches and locating the places, rivers, hills, and capitals will improve the memory and accuracy of locating all the features of world. “Practice makes man perfect” is the best tool for learning Geography.
