IISERs- Reputed Institutes for Science Education and Research

Science education is the pivotal for innovations, developments and technological advancements. The conventional disciplines such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology are backbones of any research and analysis in the field of science.

The Government of India has established the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) to integrate and promote interdisciplinary science education and research. An overarching goal of the IISERs is to enable students to shape the nation by inventing and implementing sustainable solutions for societal problems through research in science. Within a short span of few years IISERs are succeeding in attracting the young talent from all over the country.

BS-MS ( Dual Degree-5 yr ) program in Sciences

The five-year BS-MS program is the flagship programme of the IISERs. The programme aims to integrate the conventional bachelors and masters programs into a more holistic experience, bringing together conventional disciplines in the biological, chemical, physical, earth sciences and mathematics. It focuses on the unified nature of science and aims to train some of the brightest young minds of our country, through some of the best practitioners of science in India. Students are encouraged to take part in research activities, both in IISER and in other leading research laboratories, thus leveraging the symbiotic relationship between conventional education and research.

BS Programme in Engineering Sciences and Economic Sciences @ IISER Bhopal only

IISER Bhopal offers four years BS Programme for bright and motivated science students who have passed (10+2) with Mathematics as one of the subjects. The programme integrates classroom learning with research. The training during the programme enables students to pursue careers in academia, industry or government organizations.
BS Programme is offered in two broad streams

  • Engineering Sciences Disciplines– After completing a common curriculum in the first two years, students can choose from one amongst the three Major disciplines currently being offered:
    • Chemical Engineering
    • Data Science and Engineering
    • Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
  • Humanities and Social Science discipline (Economic Sciences)

The first year of the programme consists of core courses in basic sciences and introductory courses in Economics. The next three years are dedicated to specialization in Economic Sciences.

The students pursuing the BS Programme can also earn a ‘minor’ degree in other disciplines after fulfilling the prerequisites laid down by the respective department. After spending four years in the BS programme, students have the option to obtain BS-MS (Dual Degree) by spending an additional year devoted to courses and research thesis.

Admission to IISERs

Admission to IISERs is exclusively through the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT), which is a computer-based test scheduled on Sunday, June 09, 2024 at 9:00 AM, at various centres across the country.

Overall Eligibility criteria

  • The candidates must have passed the Class XII or equivalent level examination in 2022 or 2023 or 2024 from any board recognized by the Council of Boards of School Education in India COBSE.
  • Candidates must have taken at least three subjects among Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics during their Class XII (or equivalent) examination.
  • Candidates belonging to SC/ST/PwD require to score a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade in their Class XII (or equivalent) examination. Candidates belonging to other categories require to score a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade in their Class XII (or equivalent) examination.

IISER Aptitude Test (IAT)

  • IAT 2024 will be held on Sunday, June 09, 2024 at 9:00 AM.
  • IAT 2024 will be conducted as a computer-based test in various centres across India.
  • IAT will consist of 60 questions, 15 questions each from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics.
  • Total time for answering the test will be 180 minutes. Questions will be of multiple choice type with only one correct answer.
  • Each correct answer will be awarded 4 marks.
  • Each incorrect answer will lead to the deduction of 1 mark.
  • Unanswered questions will be awarded 0 mark.
  • Therefore, maximum marks in IAT will be 240.

The total marks obtained by a candidate out of 240 will be considered for preparing the Rank List.
