UG Courses

Bachelor of Science (Research)

The Indian Institute of Science offers a unique 4-year Bachelor of Science (Research) programme. The graduates of this programme will obtain a Bachelor of Science (Research) degree in a specialization. Features of the BS (Research) Programme are as follows.

This programme is carefully designed to offer specialization in a science subject, but the knowledge imparted carries a strong flavour of engineering and an exposure to social science disciplines.
Students specializing in a Major subject are encouraged to take courses on other subjects, thus maintaining the strong interdisciplinary flavour of this Bachelor of Science (Research) programme.
All students take core courses in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering and Humanities in the first one and half years (I, II and III semesters). While specialization is introduced rigorously in the following year and a half (IV, V and VI semesters),
The students are free (and are also encouraged) to choose electives from subjects other than their own specialization during this time. The course culminates with a research oriented project in the fourth year (VII and VIII semesters) supervised by a faculty.
Students who complete all the requirements for the award of the Bachelor of Science (Research) degree have the option of getting a Master of Science degree by studying at IISc for a fifth year.

B.Tech. in Mathematics and Computing

Traditional applied mathematics, with an emphasis on classical core engineering areas, rose to prominence in the 21^st century and has since dominated the engineering mathematics curricula. In the past couple of decades, a new kind of applied mathematics, dealing with generation, storage, distribution, and utilization of information, has had a tremendous impact on our lives. These tasks require a high level of computational, mathematical, and data analytic skills. These skills form the core of emerging disciplines such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Quantum Computing, Computational Biology etc. In order to cater the large demand of skilled professionals in the above areas, IISc has introduced the unique UG Programme in Mathematics and Computing.

The program hopes to attract some of the best young minds across the nation qualifying through the JEE Advanced examination.
Students from this program will be sought after as graduate students across the globe. The location of IISc in Bengaluru, the tech hub of India will be an additional bonus.
The core of the program spread over four semesters includes six courses each in Mathematics and Computing areas apart from courses in the sciences, humanities, and other engineering disciplines.
Students can then choose soft-core credits from a large pool of courses in Mathematics and Computing areas apart from many exciting electives from across the institute.
Students can opt for Research/Industry projects in their fourth year. Students can obtain a M.Tech. degree by taking an additional year of course and project credits.
